Volunteer stories
Two minutes with … Brian
Read about how Brian leads the garden volunteers here at Katharine House.
What’s your volunteering role?
I lead the team of garden volunteers. I suppose one could call me the Head Gardener, but I think that is too grand a title.
How long have you volunteered at Katharine House?
It must be 10 years now. Gardening is not a short-term vocation.
What do you like about volunteering at Katharine House?
It’s the friendliness of the gardening team and the pleasure the garden brings to all at the hospice.
How do you feel when you walk out of here?
We have made a difference. Regular exercise, fresh air and maintaining the gardens to a standard that brings pleasure to all who view and use.
What skills have you gained from volunteering?
Do it once to a quality standard. I hate having to rework things.
What would you say to a friend about volunteering here?
Give it a go – you don’t know whether you will like it unless you have tried.
Country walk or city break?
Country walk, albeit I have done ‘cities’ in my time.
Dog or cat?
Neither. I have sheep instead, but that’s another story.
